For the unfamiliar, Shama Parveen, a Muslim woman from Aurangabad in Bihar, chose to embrace Hinduism and married Shivam Verma, who is from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

Following her conversion, she adopted the name Poonam Devi. She is originally from Kazichak village in Jagdishpur and has completed high school. Her husband, who is from Rajendranagar, has an eighth-grade education and works as a craftsman in a bullion shop.

Couple’s Love Story

Shivam Verma visited Buxar for a friend’s wedding nearly a year ago, where he met Shama Parveen at the ceremony. They began talking, and soon their relationship blossomed into love.

They decided to get married, but Shama’s family opposed their relationship, forcing her to leave her home. As a result, the couple spent several days moving from place to place.

In the meantime, someone informed them about Pandit KK Shankhadhar, who resided at the Agastya Muni Ashram in Madhinath, Bareilly. They heard he could facilitate their marriage, so they traveled to his ashram.

Pandit KK Shankhadhar, with the assistance of a lawyer, reviewed their documents and then performed a purification ceremony on Shama Parveen using Gangajal. Pandit Shankhadhar has assisted many couples in similar situations.

The couple married following Hindu customs, and the young woman took a Hindu name. She chose ‘Poonam’ as her new name.

What Did Shama Parveen Say?

Shama Parveen shared that her ancestors had converted to Islam during the Mughal invasion, but her faith and belief now lie in Sanatan Dharma, and she worships Hindu gods and goddesses.

She criticized practices like “halal” and “triple talaq,” asserting that Islam doesn’t value women. Shama Parveen explained that she’s chosen to do “ghar-wapsi,” returning to Sanatan Dharma.

Despite having a deep respect for cows, she revealed that her family consumed beef at home. She pointed out that, in contrast, Hinduism has a strong tradition of respecting women.

Shama Parveen also feared that she might be forced into marriage with her cousin, prompting her to decide to marry her boyfriend in a Hindu ceremony as soon as possible.
