The cap which was identified as a limited-edition item, was purchased from a mall in Mylapore, Chennai. Investigators reviewed footage from the day of purchase, revealing the presence of the suspects, Musavir Hussain Shazib and Abdil Mathern Taha, both natives of Tirthahalli in Karnataka.
In a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the Bengaluru Rameshwaram Cafe blast case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has identified the main suspect and linked him to an Islamic State (IS) module.

The suspect, identified as Mussavir Hussain Shazib, came under the NIA’s radar following an exhaustive examination of over 1,000 cameras in the vicinity of the blast site. It was through these cameras that investigators spotted Shazib wearing a specific cap on the day of the blast. This cap, sources say, was later traced back to a limited-edition series sold in a Chennai mall, suggesting that Shazib had resided in Chennai for over a month since January of the same year.
Investigation in the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case
Further investigations led to the identification of an accomplice, Abdul Mateen Taha, who was also linked to the IS module in Shivamogga. Taha, wanted for the murder of Tamil Nadu police inspector K Wilson, was seen in CCTV footage conducting a reconnaissance of the cafe a day before the blast. The NIA discovered that Taha always wore the same cap, purchased during his stay in Triplicane.

The cap became a pivotal piece of evidence when it was found abandoned by the suspect after the blast, leading investigators to analyze it forensically. Remarkably, the cap contained hair samples, which upon examination, matched the DNA of Shazib’s parents, confirming his identity. The NIA officials meticulously traced the purchase of the cap back to the end of January from the Chennai mall.
The revelation of Shazib’s parents recognizing him in the CCTV footage further solidifies the NIA’s case against him. Additionally, investigators are now probing Shazib’s movements, including his suspected travel from Chennai to Bengaluru and his last sighting in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
The blast at the popular cafe on March 1 resulted in the injury of ten people and was carried out using an improvised explosive device (IED) triggered by a timer. The details emerging from the investigation underscore the gravity of the incident and the meticulous efforts being undertaken by the NIA to unravel the entire plot.
