59-year-old Dipankar Datta was born on 9 February 1969. Dipankar Datta was born in a Bengali family with a strong legal background. His late father, Salil Kumar Datta, was a former judge of the Calcutta High Court. His brother-in-law, Justice Amitava Roy, is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is married to Jhuma Dutta.

Datta earned his Bachelor of Law from the Hazra Law College at the University of Calcutta. He was part of the first batch of the five-year law course in 1989.After earning his Bachelor of Laws, Dipankar Datta was enrolled as an advocate on November 16, 1989. He began practicing at the High Court in Calcutta and also served as a state panel lawyer.

Dipankar Datta career

Dipankar Datta is currently a judge at the Supreme Court of India. He was nominated by Uday Umesh Lalit and appointed by Droupadi Murmu. Prior to this, he served as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court from April 28, 2020, to December 11, 2022, nominated by Sharad Arvind Bobde and appointed by Ram Nath Kovind, succeeding B. P. Dharmadhikari.

Before his tenure at the Bombay High Court, he was a judge at the Calcutta High Court from June 22, 2006, to April 27, 2020, nominated by Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal and appointed by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

Datta practiced at the Supreme Court of India and other High Courts across various states in India, specializing in Constitutional matters and civil cases. Since 1998, he was the counsel for the Union of India and represented the School Education Department, University of Calcutta, West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, and the West Bengal School Service Commission.

He served as the Junior Standing Counsel for the State of West Bengal from May 16, 2002, to January 16, 2004. Additionally, Datta was a guest lecturer at Hazra Law College from 1996 to 1997 and from 1999 to 2000.

Dipankar Datta was elevated to the position of a permanent judge at the Calcutta High Court on June 22, 2006, where he served until April 2020. On April 23, 2020, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, and he took his oath on April 28, 2020. He is scheduled to retire on February 8, 2030.
