Who Is Tejaswin Shankar?

Tejaswin Shankar is an Indian athlete who has recently won the bronze medal in the men’s high jump at Commonwealth Games 2022 and became the first Indian athlete to win to do so.

He was born on December 21st, 1998, in Delhi, and his parents are of Tamil descent. He is a native of South Delhi’s Saket. His father, Harishankar, was a lawyer who passed away in 2014 from blood cancer.

At the Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in New Delhi, where he attended school, he competed in cricket up until the 8th grade, when his physical education instructor advised him to switch to high jumping. He immediately began taking home prizes in interschool competitions.

In 2017, Tejaswin Shankar was awarded a four-year sports scholarship to Kansas State University, where he is currently pursuing a degree in business administration.

He weighs 81 kg (179 lb) and stands at a height of 6 ft 4 in (193 cm). He is 23 years old right now.

His Career

At the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, Tejaswin Shankar won the gold medal while setting a new Games record of 2.14 meters. With a jump of 2.17 meters, he took home silver in the South Asian Games in Guwahati in 2016.

When Shankar, then 17, smashed Hari Shankar Roy’s previous national record of 2.25 meters in the Junior National Championships in Coimbatore in November 2016, he became well-known.

With a performance of 2.18 meters in January 2018, Tejaswin Shankar broke Roy’s indoor national record; the following month, he improved it by one centimetre. He further broke his indoor record in February at the Big 12 Indoor Athletics Championships in Ames with a leap of 2.28 meters.

While competing for K-State sports, he further shattered his country record by an additional centimetre, leaping 2.29 meters in April 2018 at the Texas Tech Invite. With a leap of 2.22 meters, Shankar won the bronze medal at the Birmingham competition.
