Who is Varun Aaron?

Varun Raymond Aaron, born on 29 October 1989 in Jamshedpur, is a former Indian cricketer known for his fiery pace as a right-arm fast bowler. Having made his debut for the Jharkhand U-19 team and later the Jharkhand Ranji team, Aaron’s remarkable journey took him to the international stage. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India in October 2011 and followed it up with a Test debut the next month, marking the start of an illustrious career.

Aaron’s cricketing roots trace back to the MRF Pace Foundation, where he honed his skills. He made his first-class debut during the 2008–09 Ranji Trophy season, representing Jharkhand in a home fixture against Jammu and Kashmir. In that match, he claimed two wickets in each innings, showcasing his talent early on. In the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy, Aaron took 13 wickets and bowled a thunderous delivery clocked at 153.4 km/h (95.3 mph).

His raw pace caught the attention of selectors, and he was included in the India Emerging Players squad for a tour of Australia in 2011. Aaron impressed during this stint, earning a call-up to the Indian ODI squad for the series against England as a replacement for Ishant Sharma. In September 2014, Aaron signed with Durham County Cricket Club for the 2014 County Championship, further gaining valuable experience abroad.

By October 2018, he was named in India B’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy, and in December of the same year, he was bought by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL player auction for the 2019 season. Aaron announced his retirement from first-class cricket in February 2024, citing that his body could no longer sustain the demands of fast bowling. He retired with an impressive 173 wickets.

Aaron’s international debut in October 2011 against England set the stage for his future. Despite a limited role in his second match, where he bowled just 3 overs and took 1 wicket, including a key strike on Alastair Cook, Aaron demonstrated his ability to make an impact in crucial moments. After battling a serious back injury, Aaron made a triumphant return to international cricket on 25 January 2014, against New Zealand, after being sidelined for two years.
