Speaking to media, Australian sprinter’s father, Bona can be heard saying, “His name is Guot. It’s supposed to be Guot. When people call him Gout Gout, I’m not happy for him” due to Gout being a type of inflammatory arthritis that causes pain and swelling in your joints, usually as flares that last for a week or two, and then resolve.

The mix-up occurred due to an Arabic transcription error by the Sudanese authorities while Bona and his wife, Monica, fled to Egypt. Gout Gout was born near Brisbane, two years after his parents settled in South Sudan in a Muslim family and is one of seven children.

Their intended destination was Canada, but when Australian immigration documents arrived first, the family’s plans changed, and they settled in Brisbane, where Guot was born.

While conversing to the media, Bona explained, “It’s not acceptable. His name is meaningful in our culture, and when family members see Guot running, they connect with it. But when they hear Gout, the meaning is lost.”

Despite the name controversy, the sprinter has become a household name in athletics, smashing Peter Norman’s iconic 200m national record from the 1968 Olympics.
