During the jubilant pre-release celebration event for Final Fantasy 16 in Los Angeles, Takashi Kiryu captivated fans with his nostalgic recollections. He fondly shared a childhood memory that had solidified his bond with Square Enix’s flagship intellectual property. With passion in his voice, Kiryu exclaimed,
From then on, I was hooked. I was [a] Final Fantasy fan for life. Whenever a new title came out, I had to make time to play. Forget homework, forget eating, forget sleeping! I sleep in class anyway.
Demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the franchise, Takashi Kiryu further revealed,
While my friends got into sports or other activities, I was focused on games. And yeah, I had more than a few teachers tell me ‘If you play games all the time, you are not going to succeed in life. But, [they’d] be very surprised to see me standing on this stage right now with you.’

Who is Takashi Kiryu?
Takashi Kiryu is a renowned Japanese executive. He has been in the news because he recently became the CEO of the prestigious video game studio, Square Enix.
He is a resident of Tokyo, Japan, and is currently 47 years old.
Kiryu is married and revealed he’s actually a big Final Fantasy 14 fan, and plays the game entirely with his wife.
His career
According to his LinkedIn profile, from 2013 to April 2017, Takashi Kiryu held the position of Director at DENTSU INC., specifically working in the Corporate Strategy Division.
After this position, he started a new endeavor and enrolled in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan Fellows MBA Program. He flourished as a director inside this prestigious program for a year and three months, from April 2017 to June 2018.
Kiryu then moved into the position of General Manager at Dentsu Japan, where he led the Strategic Investment Department, notably under the Dentsu Innovation Initiative, based on his experiences.
In the year 2020, Takashi Kiryu began his career with Square Enix, taking up the position of General Manager in the Corporate Planning Division of Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. Due to his capabilities and dedication, he assumed the esteemed position of Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Officer in April 2021. He also worked for Square Enix Co., Ltd. as an executive officer.
Later on, he was appointed Director of SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. in 2022 and assumed the post of Chairman of the Board for SQUARE ENIX (China) CO., LTD. in the same year. In June of the same year, he added another important position to his portfolio, becoming a director of SQUARE ENIX HOLDINGS CO., LTD.
Ultimately, in March 2023, Takashi Kiryu succeeded Yosuke Matsuda as the new president and representative director of Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. and Square Enix Co., Ltd.
