After Schultz’s dismissal on December 6, 2022, Hurzeler was appointed as the new interim head coach. He then obtained the role on a permanent basis just two weeks later, making him the youngest head coach in the 2. Bundesliga at the young age of 29. Fabian Hurzeler managed to take the club to great heights by leading them to the 2. Bundesliga title and securing promotion on May 12, 2024. His defensive system is very much zonal, structured in a fixed 5-2-3 or 5-4-1, depending on the height. The front three leads the line, sitting at the same height as the opposition’s midfield and the midfield two will sit just behind the three, forming a pentagon shape.
