70 year old Madhavi Raje, the late Rajmata of Gwalior’s royal family was born on January 1. Prior to her marriage into the Gwalior royal family, she was a member of Nepal’s royal Rana dynasty.
Her grandfather, Judd Shamsher Jang Bahadur, was the head of the Rana dynasty and Nepal’s Prime Minister from 1932 until 1945. She was the daughter of the Army General of Madhesh Province in Nepal.
Her wedding to Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia on 8 May,1966 was a lavish ceremony attended by people from both India and overseas.
Her husband was sadly killed in a plane crash on September 30, 2001, near Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. The couple has two sons, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chitrangada Singh.
Her son, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia is running in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Guna, Madhya Pradesh.

She also served as the chairman of the board of governors at Scindias Kanya Vidyalaya, a school for girls. In memory of her late husband, she constructed the Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia II gallery in the royal museum.
