Hockey World Cup: On Wednesday, a South Korea journalist was hurt after falling into an open drain in the capital city of Bhubaneswar

This is despite the fact that the Odisha government had spent millions of rupees on a makeover of the city in preparation for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup.

A photojournalist in Bhubaneswar to cover the Hockey World Cup reportedly slipped into an open drain while sipping a cup of tea at a roadside stall in the Dumduma neighbourhood.

A photojournalist was involved and was taken to the hospital soon after the incident. It is worth noting that in preparation for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, the Odisha government, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), and other relevant government agencies spared no effort in giving Bhubaneswar a completely new and different appearance.

Scores of street sellers were forced to leave the area, roads were fixed, and large beautification and power projects were launched on a war footing. However, the fact that a South Korean photojournalist was hurt after slipping into an open drain is cause for alarm given the frequency with which such strange accidents have occurred.

Earlier, a schoolboy in Bhubaneswar, India, had supposedly drowned after falling into a nearby open drain. It appears that neither BMC nor any other relevant agencies have implemented any actions to close these gaps and prevent accidents that could have serious consequences, including the loss of life.

Residents angry over open drain issue

The capital city is currently undergoing extensive renovations in preparation for the major sporting event of the century. Residents of Dumduma complained about the lack of infrastructure after a foreign journalist was hurt after falling into an open drain.

It’s nothing new, the locals said, for people to fall into the city’s open drains and drown. They said the incident was particularly unfortunate because it occurred as the state government was investing millions of dollars to prepare the host city for the upcoming Men’s Hockey World Cup.
