Who Was Prema Srinivasan?
Prema Srinivasan was a well-known author and philanthropist who was renowned for being associated with the TVS family. She has been in the news because she died recently.
She was born in 1932 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Her father was K. Rangaswamy who was a former customs official. She was the granddaughter of Chinnaswami Rajam who was a visionary entrepreneur.
She did her schooling at a local school. In the 1960s, she studied history and art at Columbia University in the US. She later completed an English Ph.D. in children’s literature.
She also studied Vaishnava ceremonial customs in the years after her marriage, eventually emerging as an expert in Chennai. Later, she pursued anthropology at Columbia University to further her interest in the subject. She also formally studied Japanese Landscape Design in Kyoto.
She was married to TS Srinivasan who was the youngest son of TVS Group founder TV Sundaram Iyengar. She was a mother of two sons, two daughters, and grandchildren. Her sonsâ names are Venu Srinivasan and Gopal Srinivasan who are also renowned businessmen.
She died when she was 90 years old.
Her Career
Prema Srinivasan was a follower of Sam Dhong Rimpoche and J Krishnamurthi, both of whom were well-known for their profound interest in philosophy and spirituality. Her fascination with J. Krishnamurti’s ideas inspired the Krishnamurti Foundation India to launch “The School” in Chennai.
She was praised for her skill and understanding in a variety of fields, including music, art, history, and design. She worked as a translator, author, and freelancer.
She created the Madras Environmental Society and led a campaign to increase awareness of the contamination of river systems. She was also actively involved in tackling social and environmental concerns.
She has authored a number of publications, including the comprehensive “Pure Vegetarian CookBook,” which is a reference for authentic vegetarian cuisine in India, as well as children’s stories like “And Finally, A Blessing!” and “The Treasure Hunters.”
She actively shared her expertise with the Chennai-based InKo Centre (The Indo-Korean Cultural and Information Centre).
