Mary Com, six-time world champion is going to be one of the Indian Olympic flag bearers this year along with Manpreet Singh
These both will bear the flag at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
The Indian Olympic Association on Monday announced the two flag bearers from India for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Indian hockey skipper Manpreet Singh will be accompanied by world champion Mary Kom during flag bearing in Tokyo Olympics this year.
The flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the Tokyo games this year will be Bajrang Punia. India has great hopes from Punia this Olympic season.
India Tokyo Olympics 2021 Two Flag Bearers
Indian has ensured gender equality that’s why for both Opening and Closing Ceremonies two flag bearers are going to be there. The IOA chief Narinder Batra announced the selection of one female and one male flag bearer for both the above-mentioned events to the Olympic committee.
Manpreet Singh And Mary Kom Will Be The Indian Olympic Flag Bearers
Abhinav Bindra, gold medalist in Olympics was India’s flag bearer for the 2016 edition of the Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro. This time, Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh have been fortunate enough to get the massive opportunity.
Manpreet Singh stated that he is speechless as he never expected such he honor. Also, he is overwhelmed to accompany six-time world champions Mary Kom at the event. He gave this statement in an Indian release of Hockey. Also, he added that he has always been inspired by Mary Kom’s boxing, and getting such a big opportunity is a great responsibility as well.
The Summer Games will open by the 23rd of July and over 115 Indians will be gunning towards the winning medals. Last year the event got postponed so this season Indian athletes are prepared well and are ready to turn the tables.
Last year during an IOC meeting, it was decided that from now onwards gender equality will be maintained during the Olympics. That’s why one male and one female flag bearer trend came in. also the decision was made that no flag bearers will be repeated. So each season of the Olympics will feature fresh faces as flag bearers.
