Jake finished the line in 3.29.23, while his father Geoff, who was one of the PA announcer on the track managed to control his celebrations calmly as his son clinched the gold medal early on Day 6 of the World Athletics Championships 2022.
“Jake Wightman has just had the run of his life,” he said, before quickly moving back to the Men’s Discus final but admitting: “My voice has gone.”

Geoff has been a professional commentator for years now. He was commentating on the race at World Athletics, he had been announcing his som’s races, however never revealed the family connection.
With emotions running high following Jake’s brilliant display of performance, Geoff announced to the thousands presented at Hayward Field: ‘‘That’s my son. I coached him. And now he is a world champion’’. This was indeed an emotional moment for Geoff, but he somehow managed to control his emotions and calmly moved to the men’s discus throw event.
Speaking to American Athletics publication ( CITIUS MAG) after the race, Geoff described commentating on his son’s glorious victory:
‘‘For three minutes it was the same as most 1500ms, it was only the last thirty seconds that it changed,” the former marathon runner said. “I’m looking forward to watching it again, it’ll be like that forever. You’ll always have that moment with 150m to go where you think has he gone too soon or are they coming back and then they’ll be relief every time you watch it.”
Geoff Wightman, Athletics career and early life:
Geoff Wightman is a popular announcer at athletics meetings and marathons and have an experience of more than 20 years in a commentary. Geoff was himself an athlete before becoming a professional commentator.
He was a professional distance runner with a personal best of 2:13 and has also competed in Commonwealth Games and European championships. He finished sixth at the 1990 European Championships. Apart from being a professional commentator, Geoff has been a coach for many athletes with the likes of Stephanie Twell and Harvey Dixon. Geoff also has been Jake’s coach and mentor.
