Renowned Bollywood actor John Abraham, is all set to portray J.P. Singh in the upcoming biopic ‘The Diplomat.’ The film will showcase the real-life hero’s story, particularly focusing on his rescue of Uzma Ahmed in 2017. In order to authentically capture Singh’s persona, Abraham has reportedly spent considerable time getting to know him. Much to John’s delight, Uzma herself, whose life Singh saved, praised Abraham’s performance, and noted his striking resemblance to Singh in the film.

‘The Diplomat’

‘The Diplomat’ is a new action-drama film directed by Shivam Nair, and set to release in theaters today, on March 14, 2025. The film features the story of the mission led by J.P. Singh to rescue Uzma Ahmed, an Indian woman forcibly married and held in Pakistan. Besides John, the film stars Sadia Khateeb as Uzma Ahmed, with supporting roles from Kumud Mishra, Sharib Hashmi, and Revathy.

John’s character is based on the real-life Indian diplomat JP Singh, while Sadia Khateeb plays Uzma Ahmed, an Indian woman trapped in an unhappy marriage in Pakistan.

J.P. Singh and his rescue operation of Uzma Ahmed

Back in 2017, an Indian woman named Uzma Ahmed traveled to Pakistan to meet her lover, Tahir Ali, whom she had earlier met and got acquainted with in Malaysia. However, upon her arrival, she discovered that Ali was already married with children. Despite making plans to go back, Ali forced her into marriage and even abused her. In an attempt to seek refuge, Uzma approached the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, where J.P. Singh was serving as the then Deputy High Commissioner.

Singh subsequently gave shelter to Uzma inside the High Commission and presented her case in the Islamabad High Court. In response, Tahir Ali made several legal efforts to claim Uzma as his wife. However, Singh worked tirelessly with Indian officials, including Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, to pressure Pakistani authorities. Following a tense court battle, Uzma finally received a safe return to India on May 24, 2017. Singh himself personally escorted her to the Wagah Border the following day, ensuring her safety and reuniting her with family.

J.P. Singh, full name Jitendra Pal Singh, is a 2002 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Throughout his career as a diplomat, he has undertaken significant assignments, notably serving as Joint Secretary in the Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran (PAI) Division. Singh’s expertise and commitment have played instrumental roles in navigating complex international challenges in the past.

Seasoned diplomat Jitender Pal Singh was in January 2025 appointed as India’s new ambassador to Israel, a posting seen as important in view of the current situation in the Middle-east. Singh, an IFS officer of the 2002 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), has served in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey.
