F1 Canadian Grand Prix History, Inception, And Other Details

Since 1961, the Canadian Grand Prix has been an annual motor racing event. Since 1967, it has been a part of the Formula One World Championship. It began as a sports car event at Mosport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, before alternating between Mosport and Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, once Formula One took control. Following safety concerns in 1971, the Grand Prix was relocated permanently to Mosport. The Canadian Grand Prix moved to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Notre Dame Island in Montreal in 1978, after similar safety problems with Mosport.

In 2005, the Canadian Grand Prix was the world’s most viewed Formula One race. The race was also the third most viewed sporting event in the world, trailing only the Super Bowl XXXIX and the UEFA Champions League Final in first and second place, respectively. The Grand Prix organisers announced a 10-year extension to maintain the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve until 2024 before to the qualifying session in 2014. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 tournaments.

F1 Canadian Grand Prix Race Track Details And Legacy

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been a part of the Formula One schedule since 1978, with the exception of 1987, 2009, and 2020. It was renamed to its current identity in honour of Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve, who was tragically died during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. It appears to be a permanent circuit, but it is built each year for the Grand Prix, near to the Olympic Rowing basin and close to the 1967 World Fair site.

It’s a half-permanent, half-street circuit with a combination of slow and fast turns, as well as some very rapid barrier-lined straights. Nothing is more iconic than the ‘Wall of Champions’ on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Drivers exit a steep chicane into the main straight, but getting it wrong results in a collision with this wall, which has claimed the lives of several celebrities over the years.

Canadian Grand Prix Highest Wins, Records, And Fastest Lap

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, like many other sites on the Formula One calendar, has been a pleasant hunting ground for Ferrari, who have won 14 times here. It is one of their former drivers, the renowned Michael Schumacher, who, along with Lewis Hamilton, holds the record for individual success with seven victories.

Valtteri Bottas holds the race lap record at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. On the penultimate lap of the 2019 race, the Mercedes driver set a record of 1:13.078. (69). Despite being stranded behind both Renaults of Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo at various points during the race, the Finn finished fourth.
