The International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the India Chess Federations have agreed to develop and institutionalize the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay ahead of the 44th Chess Olympiad, in recognition of the sport’s popularity in India and global representation.

According to FIDE, the Torch Relay will always begin in India, the country where chess originated, and will then travel across all continents before arriving in the host city.
Due to a lack of time, the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay will only travel across India this year. “This project will aid in the popularisation of the game of chess and the mobilisation of chess aficionados all around the world. Starting with the next edition of the Olympiad, the torch will travel across all continents, visiting FIDE member territories before arriving in the host country and city ahead of the opening of the Chess Olympiad, in keeping with Olympic tradition “FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich was quoted as saying.
For the first time in almost 100 years of sporting history, India will host the 44th Chess Olympiad. While staging this historical and prestigious world tournament, this announcement greatly elevates India’s position in chess globally.
India names two teams in the open and women’s sections of the Chess Olympiad, with Anand serving as the team’s coach.
Along with Pentala Harikrishna and Chennai-based Krishnan Sasikiran, who has represented India on multiple times, Vidit Gujrathi, who led India to a gold medal in the virtual 2020 Chess Olympiad, will be part of India’s first squad in the open segment.
Arjun Erigaisi, 19, and SL Narayanan, 19, will also be on the first team.
