Following the new developments, Liverpool right-back Alexander‑Arnold shared how he felt Alpine and F1 were a strong combination. He shared:

I am delighted to lead an investor group investing in Alpine F1. The opportunity is very exciting, F1 is growing massively worldwide and I look forward to contributing to that growth. The sport brings together teamwork, pinpoint accuracy and innovation in a pressure-filled environment, these are aspects of my game we have in common.”

Apex

Apex is an investment group based in Portugal that already has connections to F1. They previously set up a $53.7m investment fund aside from the Alpine deal this year. Various F1 drivers Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas backed the deal, which targets business areas including sports-related technology and entertainment. Moreover, the company also invested in the TMRW Sports group, founded by Golf legends Tiger Woods and McIlroy.

The recent investment indicates an increased value and popularity of F1 teams. In fact the recent sale of stock increased Alpine’s stock value to $900m. Apex group chief executive officer, António Cacorino, also recently shared:

We have all seen growth in the sport over the last six or seven years and over the last two and three it has been really sustained growth.”

“It has changed the sport for good, we believe F1’s momentum is here to stay and this was the perfect deal. F1 has gone beyond diehard petrolhead fans, it’s a sport for the masses. All over the world people are watching it and few sports have that.”

Aside from just being investors, the athletes involved will play an extensive part with the team. Besides just attending races, they will also drive commercial strategies at Alpine using their previous experience from other sporting arenas.

Alpine

Alpine are a racing team based in Enstone in Oxfordshire. Renowned car manufacturers Renault have a majority ownership in the team and the team is named after their sportscar brand. Alpine are committed to make a return in fighting for championships having previously won two drivers’ and constructors’ titles in 2005 and 2006 with Fernando Alonso under the Renault brand.

However, the team has failed to keep up with Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull in recent years. Moreover, the team have also undergone a series of management changes this year. Just back in July, the team sacked team principal, Otmar Szafnauer, and the sporting director, Alan Permane. Around the same time, Pat Fry, who is the chief technical officer also left to join Williams.

Previously named Renault F1 Team and owned by the French automotive company Groupe Renault, the team was rebranded for 2021 to promote Renault’s sports car brand, Alpine, and continues to serve as Renault’s works team.
