Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen made history by clinching a gold medal in the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships by defeating Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the 52kg final on Thursday in Istanbul, Turkey, by scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28.

She became the fifth Indian woman to win a gold medal at the World Boxing Championships, behind six-time champion Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006), and Lekha KC (2006).
Zareen got off to a quick start against Jutamas, who had previously upset Kazakhstan’s Zhaina Shekerbekova, a three-time World Championship medallist.
She utilised her long reach to maintain her dominance over the Thai boxer, whom she had beaten in their first encounter in the 2019 Thailand Open semi-final. It was also the first gold medal for India since Mary Kom in 2018.

Who is Nikhat Zareen?
Nikhat Zareen is an amateur boxer from India. She was born on June 14, 1996, in Nizamabad, Telangana, India. Her parents’ names are Mohammad Jameel Ahmed and Parveen Sultana. Presently, she is 25 years old and a Muslim by religion. She is 163cm tall and weighs 54kg.
Nirmala Hrudaya Girls High School in Nizamabad was where she finished her elementary schooling. At AV College in Hyderabad, Telangana, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree.
She has been assigned to the Bank of India’s zonal office in AC Guards, Hyderabad, as a staff officer.
She was named the official ambassador of Nizamabad, Telangana, where she was born.
In February 2015, she was named “Best Boxer” in the All-India Inter-University Boxing Championship in Jalandhar, India, and in 2019, she received the JFW Award for Excellence in Sports.
Her Career
Zareen learned to fight from her father, Mohammad Jameel Ahmed and spent a year training with him. In 2009, Nikhat joined the Sports Authority of India in Vishakhapatnam to learn with Dronacharya awardee IV Rao. She was named the ‘golden best boxer’ at the Erode Nationals in 2010 a year later.
She won the gold medal in the flyweight class at the AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championships in Turkey in 2011.
In 2014, she won the silver medal in the Youth World Boxing Championships in Bulgaria and in the same year, she also won gold in the 3rd Nations Cup International Boxing Tournament in Novi Sad, Serbia.
She won gold in the 16th Senior Woman National Boxing Championship in Assam in 2015.
She earned a silver medal in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in Bangkok in 2019 and a gold medal at the Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria the same year.
Recently, Zareen won the gold medal in the 52kg category at the Women’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 19, 2022, defeating Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the flyweight final.
Zareen inked a brand sponsorship contract with Adidas in 2018. Zareen is backed by the Welspun business and is part of the Sports Authority of India’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme.
