8 players have been confirmed for the WTA Finals, with Maria Sakkari securing the final spot, know the 2022 prize money and players list
Maria Sakkari was the first Greek athlete to earn a spot in the WTA Finals a year ago. Now, she’s done it once more, but this time dramatically. Sakkari didn’t qualify for the Guadalajara Open’s eight automatic spots, but after making it to the semifinals, she was able to take the final spot. The Greek star defeated Veronika Kudermetova in three sets, fending off 14 of her 15 break points throughout the match to set up a semifinal matchup with Marie Bouzkova.

Sakkari, who made her maiden appearance in the top five players in the world earlier this year and rose to a career-high position of third in March, has had another successful season. The 27-year-old has already advanced to three finals this year at the Parma Ladies Open, St. Petersburg, and Indian Wells. After the four Grand Slams, the WTA Finals is a year-ending competition that is regarded as one of tennis’ most prestigious awards. It has two groups comprising four of the top eight players in the globe for each year of the calendar.
The top two players from each group then go to the semifinals, and the overall winner is decided in the final. The contest begins on October 31st and is being held in Fort Worth, Texas, this year. On November 7, the final is expected to take place.

The seven other competitors had already secured their spots in the Finals when Sakkari was the last to do so. The top seed for the competition will be world number one Iga Swiatek, while 18-year-old Coco Gauff is the youngest qualifier since Maria Sharapova in 2005.
Before an injury ended her season, two-time major champion Simona Halep was a contender. After failing a drug test at the US Open, Halep has since been given a provisional doping suspension.
