Indian Wrestlers’ Performance in 2022 World Wrestling Championships
Bajrang Punia became the only Indian wrestler to win four medals at the World Wrestling Championships history on Sunday in Belgrade, after winning bronze in 2022 edition. In one of the bouts for men’s freestyle 65 kg bronze medal, Bajrang, who won a bronze in the Olympics in Tokyo last year, narrowly defeated Sebastian C. Rivera of Puerto Rico 11-9 on points. Bajrang, who fell to American John Michael Diakomihalis in the quarterfinals, advanced to the bronze medal match by defeating Armenian Vazgen Tevanyan in the repechage round, winning 7-6 on points.
India sent a 30-person team to the current World Championships, but they performed poorly, winning only two medals. Ravi Kumar Dahiya, who won the silver medal at the Olympics in Tokyo, crashed out early and was unable to place on the podium. Meanwhile, Vinesh Phogat was the other medal winner as she earned a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships in women’s freestyle 53kg division.
