The 19th World Athletics Championships, also known as Budapest 23, took place from August 19 to 27.

Neeraj Chopra, a gold medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, won India’s lone medal in Budapest in the men’s javelin throw sport. Neeraj also became the first athlete from India to win a world championship thanks to the medal.

This was India’s third medal at the World Athletics Championships in 2023, following Neeraj’s silver at Oregon 2022 and Anju Bobby George’s bronze in the long jump at Paris 2003.

There were 23 men and 4 women among the 27 members of India’s sports team competing in the world championships. The team included national record holders Avinash Sable, Jyothi Yarraji, Jeswin Aldrin, and Praveen Chithravel. Murali Sreeshankar, Eldhose Paul, Shaili Singh, DP Manu, Annu Rani, and Abdulla Aboobacker were among the notable players on the Indian team.
