Siddharth Varadarajan’s Family And Education

Varadarajan is married to the love of life Nandini Sundar who is a sociologist and anthropologist. She is a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics. Siddharth Varadarajan was born to an IAS officer Muthusamy Varadarajan and Usha who was a housewife-turned-businesswoman. Siddharth completed his schooling at the La Martiniere in Lucknow and later from Mayo College, Ajmer.

In 1978 Siddharth Varadarajan shifted to England and connected the Brockley County school when his father was sent on a diplomatic posting to the Indian High Commission in London. Siddharth later on enrolled for an undergraduate degree in the subject economics at the London School of Economics and went on to his Masters and PhD from the University of Columbia.

While in England he was deep down engaged in left-wing activism which had a strong influence on his journalistic career. Later on in the United States Siddharth sought justice for the victims of 1984 massacres and the Bhopal Gas Tragedy whilst peddling an agenda for the Congress, the party responsible for the Sikh riots in India.

Varadarajan is married to Nandini Sundar, a sociologist and anthropologist and a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics.

In 1995 Vardarajan returned to India back to work as a journalist. Before joining The Times of India as an editorial writer in 1995. In 2004 Siddharth joined The Hindu as Strategic Affairs editor before going on to succeed Harish Khare as the Chief of the National Bureau.

In the year 2011 Varadarajan was appointed as The Hindu’s editor via an extraordinary general meeting called by the Board of Directors. Siddharth was one of the first editors to have been not drawn from the family of primary shareholders in its 150 years history of all time. On the 21st of October in 2013 Varadarajan publicly declared his resignation from The Hindu citing a change in policy by the owners of the newspaper to go back to being a family-run and edited newspaper.

Until year 2015 Siddharth was also a member of the Executive Council of the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of the Asian Studies and a member of the Indian Council of World Affairs. Siddharth has been a member of the editorial board of India Quarterly: A Journal of International Affairs.
