Activist Shreya Dhargalkar, who was arrested by Cuncolim police on Sunday evening for her remarks against the Mahajans of Shree Shantadurga Kunkalinkarin Temple, is currently recovering at the South Goa District Hospital
For the unfamiliar, Shreya Dhargalkar’s troubles escalated as devotees of Devi Lairai from Shirgao called for her immediate arrest and banishment.
On Monday, these devotees marched to the Bicholim police station and met with Police Inspector Rahul Naik, demanding that Shreya and her accomplice be charged for their comments about the devotees of Devi Lairai and the Dhond community.

The Cuncolim police had arrested activist Dhargalkar on Sunday for defaming and hurting the religious sentiments of the Mahajans of Shree Shantadurga Kunkalinkarin Temple through a social media post.
Mayem MLA Premendra Shet and Bicholim MLA Dr. Chandrakant Shetye joined the devotees at the police station. Meanwhile, Namita Fatarpekar was remanded to four days of police custody by the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Margao, and Shreya Dhargalkar was admitted to South Goa District Hospital on Monday.

Tensions in Cuncolim rose after the Mahajans of Shree Shantadurga Kunkalinkarin marched to the Cuncolim police station, demanding Dhargalkar’s arrest for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and defaming them with false accusations.
Controversy Explained
The controversy began with a video released by Dhargalkar, claiming that Namita Fatarpekar was harassed by a temple committee and the panchayat.
Police stated that Kavendra Dessai of Shree Shantadurga Kunkalinkarin Sausthan, Fatorpa, Quepem, filed a complaint against Dhargalkar.
The complaint alleged that Dhargalkar and others made false and derogatory comments on social media against the committee members, thereby hurting the religious sentiments of the members and Mahajans of Shree Shantadurga Kunkalinkarin Sausthan.
Police are on the lookout of Abhishek Naik for a similar offence and Fartarpekar was remanded in three days police custody while Dhargalkar was admitted to the South Goa District Hospital after she complained of chest pain.
Furthermore, it was alleged that Dhargalkar used vulgar language to outrage the religious feelings of the Hindu community and defame the temple committee members.
The complaint also suggested that these false allegations were intended to promote disharmony and discrimination among different religions, thereby offending the Hindu community.
According to the statement given by police, Shreya Dhargalkar will be produced before the court following her discharge from the hospital.
A tense situation prevailed in Cuncolim on Sunday after members of the Desai community, the mahajans of Shree Shantadurga Kunkalikarin Temple, took to the streets to protest against remarks by Shreya Dhargalkar directed against the Naik-Desai community managing the temple with protests breaking out.
