The club statement by Brighton stated that Sam’s duties would be taken on immediately by Mike Cave, associate technical director, with assistance from George Holmes, manager of scouting and intelligence.

Jewell, who took over as Brighton’s head of recruitment 16 months ago when Paul Winstanley left for Stamford Bridge, resigned from that position. He will likely serve out his notice term before beginning his new role in November.

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired Chelsea in 2022, the club has undergone significant internal restructuring, and Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, two of their co-sporting directors, are eager to centre the business around them.

The Blues and Albion have a long history together, dating back to 2022 when the former manager Graham Potter and his backroom crew were acquired. In addition to Potter, the Seagulls sent Billy Reid, Bjorn Hamberg, Bruno Saltor, Ben Roberts, and Kyle McCauley to Chelsea as assistants.

Jewell became the latest member to make a move between the two clubs after goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, defender Marc Cucurella, and midfielder Moises Caicedo arrived at Stamford Bridge.

With news on Tuesday that Chelsea will recruit Jewell, the south coast club’s head of recruitment, they have already raided Brighton for the eleventh time. Here is all you need to know about the latest member.

Who is Sam Jewell?

Sam Jewell is former Brighton’s head of recruitment who took over as the Seagulls’ head of recruitment in 2022 after Paul Winstanley left to join Chelsea. He was born on Oct 1, 1989, in England.

Sam Jewell’s career

During the COVID lockdown, he even learnt Spanish so he could converse with South American footballers.

The 34-year-old became the men’s under-21 team’s recruitment manager when he joined Albion in May 2016 and was promoted to emerging talent manager in March 2019.

After spending time in the Bradford and Leeds academies, the younger Jewell started his career with Newport County as a football director and scout. He then worked for eighteen months as Swindon’s top scout.

Before being promoted to the position of emerging talent scouting manager for Brighton two years later, he moved there in 2016 to handle recruitment at the Under 21 level.

Jewell was essential to Brighton’s hiring procedure. He was involved in the signings of Julio Enciso, Alexis Mac Allister, and Moises Caicedo. He was involved in the Seagulls’ recent acquisition of Valentin Barco from Boca Juniors as well.

Jewell will report to Laurence Stewart in the club’s revamped transfer squad, as well as head of recruiting Paul Winstanley, whom Jewell succeeded at Brighton when Winstanley joined the Blues.

Sam Jewell’s parents

Sam Jewell is the son of former top-flight manager Paul Jewell. His father was a successful manager who promoted Bradford City and Wigan to the Premier League.

The 59-year-old has assisted his son in establishing a career in football and was previously Swindon Town’s director of football.
