An Iraqi refugee identified as Salwan Momika set ablaze some pages of the Quran outside the Stockholm mosque on the day of Bakri Eid 2023. 

Speaking to CNN on the phone earlier on Wednesday, the protester Salwan Momika said he came to Sweden five years ago from Iraq and has Swedish citizenship and told CNN he identifies as an atheist.

The man who demanded a ban on the Quran also stamped his foot on the holy book after laying a strip of bacon on it. In addition to Momika, another protester translated his remarks. 

On June 28 (local time), the shocking incident was reported during Eid-al-Adha celebrations.

Who is Salwan Momika?

Salwan Sabah Matti Momika is now known around the globe as the man who begged permission to burn the book and then set it on fire in public. The protestor is an Iraqi refugee who openly “expressed his opinion” about the Islamic sacred text and wants the book to be banned.

Iraqi Nationals Living In Sweden

The individual migrated to Sweden from Iraq a few years ago and resided in the Järna municipality in Södertälje, Stockholm County. His citizenship is Salwan.

He posted a video on social media to alert people about his move

“My protest will take place on the first day of Eid. The protest will occur in front of Stockholm’s main mosque, where I will burn the Quran… My loved ones who live in Stockholm and would like to participate in the demonstrations and contribute both financially and emotionally, my information is below,” he stated in a video before kissing the camera goodbye.

According to sources, his goal was to emphasise the value of free expression, and he was cited as adding, “This is democracy. It’s in danger if they tell us we can’t do it.”

Momika wrote in his application to the act, which was accessed and quoted by worldwide media, “I want to demonstrate in front of the large mosque in Stockholm, and I want to voice my view regarding the Quran… I’m going to rip it up and burn it.”

Sweden Granted Permission For The Act

Sweden rarely condemns protests or people’s opinions.

On Wednesday, a court there granted permission for Momika’s demonstration.

Contradicting the permission, the Stockholm police refused to approve the Quran burnings.
