Anil Vaibhav Kale, a resident of Pune, Maharashtra, had a distinguished career as both a soldier and a worker for the United Nations as per his biography

The Indian national Anil Vaibhav Kale was tragically killed while traveling in a vehicle from the Rafah region to a hospital in the Khan Younis area.

Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson of the United Nations Secretary-General, revealed Kale’s identity in a statement on Monday night. The statement emphasized the heavy toll the Gaza conflict was taking on civilians and humanitarian workers, urging an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

According to UN officials, Anil Vaibhav Kale had recently joined the UN as a security service coordinator in Gaza. He was traveling in a vehicle marked as belonging to the United Nations at the time of the incident.

The United Nations officials are uncertain about who shot at the vehicle carrying Kale and another UN aid worker. This marks the first instance of an Indian losing their life in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) revealed that they are investigating the shooting and the death of the UN aid worker. They explained that the attack happened in an area where combat was actively taking place.

Gilles Michod, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), commended Colonel Kale for his commitment to making a difference in some of the world’s most dangerous areas, including the Gaza Strip, where he served with the UN. Michod mentioned that Kale consistently inspired his colleagues.

46 year old Colonel Anil Vaibhav Kale was from Nagpur and attended the Somalwar High School. According to his LinkedIn profile, he earned a BA in Humanities from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a Diploma of Education in Senior Defence Management from Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in Indore.

He finished the International Red Cross’ Certificate Programme in International Humanitarian Law in 2009. In 2012, he completed another Certificate Programme in Behavioural Science at the Indian Institute of National Integration.

Kale was 46 years old when he tragically passed away. Kale worked for the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) and had previously served in the Indian Army.

Anil Kale joined the Indian army in 1998. He commanded the 11 JAK Rifles in Kashmir, taught at the army’s Infantry School in Mhow, conducted operations in the northeast and on the Siachen glacier, and was actively involved in counterintelligence and counterterrorism operations. In the Indian Army, he served as Battalion Commander and Rifle Company Commander, among other capacities. Colonel Kale will resign from the Army permanently in 2022.

He has left behind his wife and two children to mourn his loss.
