For context, Rahul Gandhi made his statement during the Samvidhan Samman Sammelan in Prayagraj, where he argued for the need for a caste census.

What Did Rahul Gandhi Say?

In his statement, Gandhi remarked, โ€œI checked the list of Miss India winners to see if there were any Dalit, tribal, or OBC women, but found none.โ€

Gandhiโ€™s comments aimed to highlight the underrepresentation of various social strata in different aspects of life in India.

During his speech, he also promised that if the Congress party comes to power, it will conduct a caste census, something the BJP government under PM Modi has been accused of delaying.

He further emphasized that ninety percent of the people are not part of the system. However, in their retaliation, BJP leaders were quick to fact-check Gandhiโ€™s remarks.

What Did the BJP Spokesperson Say?

A national executive member of BJPโ€™s Yuva Morcha, Dr. B.L. Sreenivas Solanky, highlighted that Riya Ekka, from the tribal district of Jashpur in Chhattisgarh, won the Miss India title in 2022 through her talent and hard work.

Meanwhile, a BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also shared a video of Riya Ekka, reiterating that a tribal girl from Chhattisgarh won the Miss India title just two years ago.

Meanwhile, some social media users criticized Gandhi, accusing him of trying to divide the country and mislead the public.

21-year-old Riya Ekka who is a tribal Hindu from Chhattisgarh won the title of Miss India back in 2022. Riya participated in the Glamorous Production event held in Bhilai where she represented Jashpur district. She belongs to the tribal community.

Social Media Userโ€™s Reaction

Kanishka Dadhich, a social media user, pointed out that the Miss India competition is not organized by the Government of India and that demanding reservations in such competitions is nonsensical.

She accused Gandhi of playing with the emotions of innocent Hindus to provoke them.

Rajesh Balwant Phadke, another social media user, argued that Gandhiโ€™s comments only highlight the failure of the Congress party post-Independence in ensuring equal opportunities.

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t Jawaharlal, Indira, Rajiv, or Sonia ensure that there was equal opportunity in India, including for Dalit or tribal Miss India winners? Again, discrimination against minorities,โ€ Phadke commented.
