About the Suspect
As of now there isn’t much information available about the suspect. However, North Rhine-Westphalia’s interior minister, Herbert Reul, said the suspect was residing in a refugee home in Solingen, which was searched on Saturday.
Various reports claim that the man had arrived in Germany in late 2022 seeking asylum and that his clothes were smeared with blood.
Meanwhile, German federal prosecutors have taken over the case and are investigating whether the suspect was a member of the Islamic State, according to a spokesperson. He is a 26 year old immigrant from Syria who is a Muslim by religion and has been identified by the German Federal Prosecutor’s office as “Issa Al H.” He had applied for asylum in Germany, police said.
“Due to his radical Islamist beliefs, he decided to kill as many people as possible, who he considered to be non-believers, at the Solingen city festival on August 23, 2024,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. “There he stabbed festival visitors repeatedly and deliberately in the neck and upper body with a knife.”
ISIS referred to the attacker as a “soldier of the Islamic State” on its Telegram account on Saturday, claiming the attack was in retaliation for actions against Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere.
However, no evidence was provided to support this claim, and the exact nature of the suspect’s connection to the group remains unclear.
