After receiving an anonymous email complaint at the conclusion of the 2022 season, the university initiated an independent inquiry in December that was later concluded by a former inspector general of Illinois. The university released an executive summary of the investigation’s findings.
Although it was determined by the inquiry that Pat Fitzgerald and the other coaching staff members were not aware of the hazing actions, it was also noted that they had the chance to become aware of and report such behavior.
On being suspended, Fitzgerald expressed his dismay and said he was unaware of the alleged conduct. He underlined the dedication of Northwestern football to developing the moral character and high standards of its student-athletes.
