Although the exact nature of Maria Cummins’ illness is unknown, the fact that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 is notable. In a 2005 piece for Athletes Voice, Cummins explained how his mother had shielded all five of her kids from the disease and how his father, Peter Cummins, had been both parents at the time.
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness in life, such as cancer or heart failure.
Speaking in 2021, Cummins opened up on the bond he has with his mother and revealed how she battled breast cancer when he was in high school. “I remember her telling us ‘I’m not going to be my normal self for the next little while,’ at the outset,” he told Athletes Voice.
“Mum went through all the chemo and radiation therapy. It lasted about six months. She’s one of the lucky ones. She came out the other side.”
Famous Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath’s wife Jane lost her battle with breast cancer in 2008. The third day of each Sydney Test is dubbed as the “Jane McGrath day.” Moreover, Glenn and Jane established the McGrath Foundation three years before Jane’s passing. Along with painting the entire SCG pink on this day, a sizable donation is made to the foundation.
Who will lead Australia in the third test?
Steven Smith, the vice-captain of Australia’s Test team, will take Cummins’ spot for the third test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which is scheduled to be played at Indore’s Holkar Stadium. Throughout his 94-match Test career, Smith, who has acted as Cummins’ official deputy, will be leading Australia for the third time after doing so 36 times previously.
