The outrage began on January 2nd when Khursheed Alam took to his Facebook account, appealing to the governments of Bangladesh and Pakistan, stating, “I am appealing to both the governments that Indian Muslims want a separate homeland adjoining Pakistan and Bangladesh.” This inflammatory statement immediately triggered widespread condemnation, leading to a complaint being lodged against the professor.
The Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) played a crucial role in escalating the matter. ABVP members submitted a memorandum to the university’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Ranjit Kumar, urging the dismissal of Khursheed Alam and demanding appropriate action against him. Following mounting pressure, the professor chose to resign. However, his resignation was accompanied by claims of being forced to step down and allegations of harassment by JPU authorities.
The situation took a legal turn when Khursheed Alam was issued a show-cause notice, asking him to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for his contentious social media posts. JPU’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Ranjit Kumar, expressed disapproval of posting such matters on social media platforms, labeling it as entirely wrong and suggesting that Alam might not be in a stable state of mind.
Siwan SP Shailesh Kumar Sinha clarified that the police were investigating the case, acknowledging that Alam had expressed his opinion through the Facebook posts. The professor’s resignation, however, did not deter the investigation process.
Khursheed Alam’s Facebook posts not only advocated for a separate homeland but also accused the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) of declaring in its manifesto to make India a Hindu Rashtra. Furthermore, he made baseless allegations against the judiciary, claiming it favored judgments against the Muslim minority.
Khursheed Alam attempted to justify his statements by asserting that they were directed against the ‘Hindu nationalist government’ in power. His defense of raising ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans was met with controversy, as he argued that it fosters good relations with hostile neighbors. When asked to delete his anti-national posts, Alam remained defiant, refusing to do so and comparing slogans with an Indian raising ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ being equivalent to a Pakistani raising ‘Vande Mataram.’
The complexity of the situation deepened when Alam, in a later post, offered a mix of slogans, including both ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ and ‘Hindustan Zindabad.’ However, he refused to say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai,’ branding it a “Brahminical idea” and expressing his opposition to it.
As the controversy continues to unfold, Khursheed Alam’s public apology on Facebook emerged, where he stated, “I have never tried or intended to hurt anybody’s sentiments through this post. If it hurt anyone, I seriously apologize for it.” Whether this apology will quell the outrage or further intensify the situation remains uncertain.
Details about Khursheed Alam’s educational background are not known.
