Onam in Kerala

The harvest and cultural festival of Onam is observed annually, mostly by the people of Kerala. It is the official festival of the state, a significant yearly occasion for Keralites that encompasses a range of cultural events.

Vamana, the Hindu god Vishnu’s fifth avatar, and the magnanimous daitya monarch Mahabali are honored on the day of Onam. Hindu mythology states that after Mahabali, the king of the asuras, defeats Indra, the king of the devas, they finally flee to Vishnu, who grants Indra his rightful place back in authority.

In order to fulfill this, Vishnu takes on the form of Vamana, a dwarf priest. Vamana attends one of the ceremonial prayers led by King Mahabali, who is a follower of Vishnu.
