Police Arrested Accused
The accused, 34-year-old William Jeremy Moore, was apprehended by Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry following the shooting on February 8, as per reports.

Authorities stated that the shooting transpired following a confrontation initiated by Moore, who had arrived at the premises with the intention of leasing a room. According to Terry, Moore brandished a firearm and fired at Patel.
“Terry reported that Sheffield Police promptly apprehended Moore on 13th Avenue as he attempted to trespass into an abandoned residence,” he added.
While investigating Moore, the weapon used in the murder was discovered in his possession. According to a felony complaint, Patel attempted to persuade Moore to depart before the shooting incident occurred.
Despite Moore initially starting to leave, he abruptly turned and fired two shots into Patel’s chest.
Witnesses’ Accounts
Jemeriz Owens, a barber working nearby, observed the aftermath and shared his account. “I heard three gunshots,” Owens recalled, visibly disturbed. “It’s unbelievable; he was just doing his job.”
The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) expressed deep sorrow, shock, and outrage in a statement, condemning the senseless act of violence that claimed the life of a small business owner.
“In our communities, there is no room for senseless acts of violence, and our hearts ache for Pravin’s family – his wife, children, and grandchildren,” stated AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel.
“Pravin Patel’s family should not bear the challenges they are currently facing, and our sympathies go out to all those who were close to and cherished him,” expressed Sanjay M. Patel, AAHOA Alabama Regional Director. 76 year old Pravin Patel dedicated over four decades of his life to the town of Sheffield, where he diligently managed the same motel.
The individual was a familiar presence in the community for over 40 years, earning widespread recognition for the family’s genuine and caring nature, according to the statement. AAHOA expresses confidence that Alabama authorities will assist the Patel family in seeking justice.
In recent months, there has been a series of deaths involving individuals of Indian or Indian-American descent across the country.
