The incident, which took place at BORG Dreierschützengasse High School, has become one of the deadliest school shootings in Austria’s postwar history.

The deceased gunman reportedly opened fire at a secondary school in Graz, killing 10 people and injuring dozens.

A former pupil killed nine people and then himself at a secondary school in the southern Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday in the worst school shooting in the country’s modern history and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said six of the victims were female and three were male, and that 12 people were also injured. He gave no further details to identify the victims but Austrian media revealed most were pupils of BORG Dreierschützengasse high school, about a kilometer from Graz’s historic center.

The gunman was a former student at the school who didn’t finish his studies. While social media reports have claimed that the suspect is said to be former student Samuel Haider and he tried to join the mercenary group Wagner through a recruitment agency in Serbia in 2023, but was rejected for unspecified reasons, these claims are fake with the photo being shared of the shooter actually that of Sam Hyde holding a gun. The identity of the real shooter hasn’t been revealed keeping in line with Austria’s laws.

Austria School Shooting

The tragic shooting took place around 10 a.m. local time in BORG Dreierschützengasse High School when the gunman entered two classrooms and opened fire. Following the firings, school authorities immediately evacuated students and staff, following which a major police operation followed. Special forces and helicopters were soon called into place and authorities confirmed that 10 people, including the shooter, had died, with up to 30 others injured.

Notably, the recent school shooting now stands as a dark milestone, surpassing previous incidents like the 2020 Vienna attack and the 1997 Mauterndorf shooting.

While the exact identity of the killer hasn’t been ascertained, police and local media state that the attacker was a 21-year-old former student of the school who was bullied as a student. According to reports, he was armed with a pistol and a shotgun, both of which he owned legally. After the gunman targeted students and a teacher, he reportedly turned one of the weapons on himself.

Police said they assumed the 21-year-old Austrian shooter, who was found dead in a bathroom, was operating alone when he entered the school with two guns and opened fire with his identity yet to be revealed.

As of now, the shooter’s motive still remains unknown, with police continuing their investigations but he is said to have operated alone with no other person suspected. According to reports, authorities took the families of the victims to a nearby sports hall, where crisis intervention teams offered support.

Tributes and Condolences

Following the tragic shooting incident, tributes and condolences have come in from various quarters, with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker calling it a “national tragedy”. He added:

There are no words for the pain and grief that all of us in Austria are feeling. Today it’s all about compassion. And about being there for one another. In these difficult times, humanity is our strongest force.”

Meanwhile, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen added:

What happened today … strikes our country at the heart. These were young people who had their whole lives ahead of them. A teacher who accompanied them on their journey.”

Ursula von der Leyen, who is the President of the European Commission also expressed her sympathies, saying:

It’s hard to bear when schools become places of death and violence.”

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas added:

every child should feel safe at school and be able to learn free from fear and violence.”

Meanwhile, Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig also added:

We must stand together as a society. Hate and violence must never gain the upper hand. Our response to this must be an even stronger commitment to solidarity and respect.”
