Hydeia Broadbent, who dedicated her life to bringing about awareness about HIV and AIDS, died on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. Following her death, her father, Loren Broadbent, confirmed the news of her passing through a post on Facebook. He shared:

With great sadness, I must inform you all that our beloved friend, mentor, and daughter, Hydeia, passed away today after living with Aids since birth. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout her life, Hydeia remained determined to spread hope and positivity through education around HIV/AIDS.”

Broadbent was a lifelong HIV/AIDS patient and eventually succumbed to the disease.

Hydeia Broadbent was born on June 14, 1984, in Nevada, USA, with undiagnosed HIV. She was born to a drug-addicted mother who abandoned her at a Las Vegas hospital. A couple named Loren and Patricia Broadbent initially took her in as a foster child before eventually adopting her when she was three years old. However, just before her fourth birthday, her family discovered that she had been HIV-positive since birth, and had contracted AIDS. As a result, Hydeia experienced regular blood infections, pneumonia, and fungal infections in her brain while growing up.

It is claimed that she married her childhood friend, Tyler Small, who also had AIDS but nothing is officially confirmed. She didn’t have any children with her net worth between $500,000-1 million.

Hydeia was just 39 years old when she passed away.

Broadbent started out her work as an HIV/AIDS activist and public speaker at the young age of 6. She went on to speak at many events, including AIDS benefit concerts, documentaries, college campus education events, and talk shows. By the time she was 12, she had already appeared on popular national television programs like “Oprah,” “20/20,” “Good Morning America” and “A Conversation with Magic Johnson.” She also established the Hydeia L. Broadbent Foundation for which she received a Black Achievement Award from Jet magazine. She remained steadfast to her role of promoting awareness about HIV and AIDS till her death.
