One of India’s most renowned film producers, Guneet Monga, brings home the prestigious Oscar, know her age, family and parents

Her film, “The Elephant Whisperer,” won the Oscar for best documentary short film.

The CEO of Sikhya Entertainment and co-founder of Indian Women Rising (a cinematic collective), Guneet Amarpreet Kaur Monga debuted in the industry with her first movie, Partition, in 2007. Since then, there had been no turning back for the director.

Guneet Amarpreet Kaur Monga was born on November 21, 1983. She attended Bluebells School International, New Delhi, India, and went to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, to earn her bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications.

After losing both her parents and shutting shop in Delhi, she moved back to Mumbai to begin work on Once Upon a Time in Mumbai for Balaji Telefilms. She lost her mother Amarpeet Kaur in 2008 and father as well with both her parents dying in a period of six months.

Ahead of becoming a film producer, Monga worked as a DJ, an insurance agent, and a sales agent for Laughing Cow cheese. She also worked as an event planner, a rally car driver, and a property saleswoman.

The 39-year-old director married Sunny Kapoor, a fashion entrepreneur, on December 12, 2022.

Gunneet Monga’s Career

Monga started her career as an intern for the 2004 French-German film ‘Valley of Flowers.’

In 2006, she joined Sepia Entertainment as a full-time production coordinator. Her movie ‘Partician’ from 2007 was nominated for the Genie Award for Best Achievement in Cinematography in 2008.

In the same year, she founded her own production house, Sikhya Entertainment, along with Achin Jain.

Awards And Recognitions

Monga is a BAFTA nominee, the first producer from India to be inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and one of the top 12 achievers in the Global Entertainment industry, according to the Hollywood Reporter. She was also enlisted in the top 50 Indians changing India and named as one of the women doing extraordinary things on the worldwide stage.

Her movie Kavi won the Student Academy Award for Narrative in 2009 and was nominated for the 2010 Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Film.

In 2014, Monga was facilitated as one of the 35 Achievers Under 35 by the Mid-Day. She was one of the two women who were featured in Variety’s ‘International Women’s Impact Report 2018’. She was given the award for “Producer of the Year” by GQ Magazine in January 2019.

The same year, in October, she was awarded “Most Powerful Women in Indian Business’ and “India’s Most Powerful Businesswomen.” In December, she was one of the “Five Indian Entertainers in the Global Spotlight”. For her short film, “Period. End of Sentence”, she won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2019.

In April 2021, she was honoured by the French Foreign Minister Jean-Yues Le Drian in Delhi as ‘Chevalier dans I’Ordre des Arts et des lettres’. It means the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, which is the second highest civilian French honour.
