Gregory Carro was appointed a judge by Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 1998. He has experience with crimes that carry a terrorist enhancement and is known for being severe on criminals. In November, he sentenced Christopher Brown, a 23-year-old man who had threatened to assault a synagogue, to 10 years in prison. Five years of post-release supervision was added by him.
In a well-known case in 2013, he denied bail to Sylvia Mitchell, a psychic who was found guilty by a jury of defrauding her clients out of $138,000.
His cases have earned nicknames, including the “rape cops,” a “killer nanny,” and a “blowtorch hubby” and in 2021, he presided over the moped hit-and-run death of Gone Girl actor Lisa Banes.
In 2011, Carro presided over the trial of an NYPD officer accused of r*ping a young fashion executive, a woman he’d been dispatched to help when she was too intoxicated to get out of her taxi but a jury cleared the officer of r*pe and convicted him of official misconduct for the three caught-on-video visits he made to the woman’s apartment during his shift that night with Carro sentencing former officer, Kenneth Moreno to a year at Rikers Island jail.
Gregory Carro’s family and education
Gregory Carro is a second generation judge and according to a 1998 family biography in The New York Times, his father, John, did not speak English when he arrived in the United States from Puerto Rico in 1937.
After becoming a lawyer, John Carro was passionate about defending Latinos in human rights matters and wished to see more Latinos in the legal field. He went on to become a judge and the first Puerto Rican to serve on an appeal court in New York and while his father was loud and outspoken, Gregory is considered more reserved and cautious.
At sentencings, Carro is an emphatic advocate for law, order, and victims and is believed to be pro-prosecution.
The family had seven children, including Gregory. When John Carro’s law career took off, they relocated from the Bronx to a larger house in Rockland County.
Three of Gregory’s siblings went on to become lawyers, and one of them became a doctor. Gregory is a Rutger School of Law graduate.
