Abhishek Swarnkar beaten to death

In a shocking incident that took place on Tuesday night, March 11, 2025, in Sector 67, Mohali, an Indian scientist named Dr. Abhishek Swarnkar was beaten to death. The incident took place after Swarnkar got into a heated parking dispute with his neighbor Monty, near his rented home in Mohali. Based on CCTV footage, Monty and some locals were standing near Swarnkar’s bike. As Swarnkar approached to move his vehicle, the two men broke out into an argument.

The situation quickly escalated, and Monty allegedly pushed and punched Dr. Swarnkar multiple times in the stomach. Following the beatings, Swarnkar collapsed on the street and could not get up. Bystanders and both families made efforts to intervene, but he lay motionless until help arrived. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Swarnkar sadly did not survive. Police have since registered a case of culpable homicide and are currently investigating the incident.

According to reports, Swarnkar had recently undergone a kidney transplant, with his sister as the donor. As a result, he was on dialysis at the time of the incident, and his neighbor even knew about it. Despite this, his neighbor Monty resorted to the beating, which ultimately killed him.

Age 39 Abhishek Swarnkar who hailed from Jharkhand was a respected and prominent Indian scientist known for his extensive work in nanomaterials and optoelectronics. He led various pioneering research projects on perovskite nanocrystals, which brought him recognition in leading scientific journals. Swarnkar also played a key role in advancing solar cell technology and earned international recognition for his innovative approach.

He was working at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Mohali, died in a parking dispute near his rented home in Sector 67.

Hailing from Jharkhand’s Dhanbad, Dr Abhishek Swarnkar was a distinguished scientist with his work featuring in international journals and he had earlier worked in Switzerland and had recently returned to India and joined IISER as a project scientist.

After completing his studies, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Empa and ETH Zürich in Switzerland. Upon completing his research there, he returned to India and joined IISER Mohali as a project scientist.

There, he continued his influential research in nanomaterials and optoelectronics. Abhishek once attended the 67th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Germany, which served as a remarkable achievement highlighting his academic brilliance.
