According to Rashtrapati Bhavan’s official announcement, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, a former Union home secretary, has been appointed governor of Manipur, where ethnic strife between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo began last year.
Furthermore, following a complete term in office, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan of Kerala has been given another term. He has now been assigned to work for Bihar, which will hold assembly elections in the upcoming year. During Khan’s time as governor, there had been a lot of tension between him and the Kerala administration.

On November 26, 1960, 64-year-old Ajay Kumar Bhalla was born in Jalandhar, Punjab, India. He is 5ft 5in tall. While the names of his parents aren’t known, his father was a government employee.
He finished his early schooling in Punjab before going on to further his education. Bhalla graduated from the University of Delhi with a Master of Science in botany.
By graduating with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, he further strengthened his academic credentials. He also earned an M.Phil degree in Social Sciences from Punjab University.His wife Jyoti Grover Bhallais a teacher at Delhi Public School and the two are parents to Girik Bhalla and Akriti Bhalla who is an Engagement Manager at McKinsey and Company.

Ajay Kumar Bhalla career
Ajay Kumar Bhalla succeeded Rajiv Gauba as India’s Home Secretary on August 23, 2019. He is a retired IAS official from the Assam, Meghalaya cadre who was a part of the 1984 batch. Up to August 22, 2024, he held the position of Home Secretary of India for around five years.
On December 24, 2024, Ajay Kumar Bhalla was named governor of Manipur. Bhalla’s appointment coincides with the ongoing conflict between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur, which started on May 3, 2023, when the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) staged a rally in opposition to the Manipur High Court’s order to examine adding the Meitei community to the list of Scheduled Tribes.
He formerly served as Director (Ports) at the Department of Shipping, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce, and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Coal.
