The suicide of the resident doctor named Divesh Garg highlights the existing conditions at these medical colleges, which are replete with toxic behaviour from seniors and extreme work hours, jeopardising the health and well-being of these medical trainees.

The PG doctor Divesh Garg was supposedly overworked, sleep-deprived, and had little time to eat. His father reportedly claimed that his son had been unhappy since joining the department and was constantly complaining about insults from the teachers. The postmortem report is still awaited in this suicide case. The police will be taking action after the report is announced.

Patel Nagar Police Station is carrying out the investigation. Garg died by injecting a lethal substance and he was a resident of Haryana.

27-year-old Divesh Garg was a first-year Paediatrics postgraduate (PG) resident at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical & Health Sciences (SGRRIHMS) Medical College in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun. He passed away on Friday, May 17, has raised new concerns about the gruelling hours and hostile environment that doctors face.


The United Doctors Front Association (UDFA) issued a press release on Saturday, May 18, expressing serious worry about the escalating number of deaths in the neighbourhood.

The press release highlighted that this incident took place due to toxic departmental environment, the department’s refusal to accept his thesis protocol and excessive duty hours.

It also called the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Human Rights Commission, and the government to pay attention to the needs of doctors and take appropriate action to address these challenges.

Another suicide attempt by a PG resident

A third-year PG resident attempted suicide the same day. According to an IMA JDN tweet, she swallowed 9-10 Alprex tablets and informed her department that she planned to jump from a building due to the toxicity. Her colleagues managed to calm her down, and the department sent her home. The victim or the college authorities have not given any statement related to this incident yet.
