Boxing career

Luis Nery started out his professional boxing career in May 2012, before winning 23 straight fights (17 knockout wins) to challenge for a world title against unbeaten Japanese hero Shinsuke Yamanaka, who held the WBC and Ring Magazine bantamweight titles. The pair faced off in an exciting bout on August 15, 2017, where Nery battered Yamanaka under four rounds.

However, the win was shrouded in controversy after Nery tested positive for zilpaterol (a banned substance) in a pre-fight test just over a week after the win. As a result, ‘The Ring’ stripped Nery of their title and reinstated Yamanaka as champion. However, the WBC accepted the fighter’s explanation that he had mistakenly ingested contaminated food and allowed him to retain their title.

During the rematch with Yamanaka in March 2018, Nery shockingly came in three pounds over the bantamweight limit and eventually lost the WBC title on the scales. Despite this, Yamanaka went through with the fight and subsequently lost in just two rounds. The Japanese Boxing Commission, however, retaliated against Nery’s conduct and banned him from competing in Japan for life.

Following this scandal, Nery went on to win four stoppage wins before moving up to compete for the vacant WBC super bantamweight title. On September 26, 2020, Nery managed to beat Aaron Alameda to become a two-weight world champion. However, Luis Nery’s success was short-lived as he competed in a unification matchup against WBO counterpart Brandon Figueroa in his next fight. Nery was stopped in seven rounds, recording his first defeat so far. He has since won four fights, three by stoppage, and will now face off against Naoya Inoue, for which the Japanese Boxing Commission agreed to lift the challenger’s ban.
