Mhatre, who has an X account with name ‘MumbaichaDon’, had alleged in his post last month that the Congress “wants to take away wealth from Hindus and distribute it to Muslims as it hates Hindus”. Congress worker J. Saravanan from Srirampura had filed an FIR against him and according to the FIR, Bhiku Mhatre’s post “tried to trigger communal unrest in the society bycreating hatred between Hindus and Muslims.”
Bhiku Mhatre was allegedly brought by the police from Goa to the Commissioner Office of the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Cell.
A social media user going by the name @MumbaichaDon was taken into custody by the Karnataka Cyber Crime Police after the user shared an edited video of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and sent a tweet insulting the Muslim community.

On Saturday, May 18, the user who goes under the handle Bhiku Mhatre was brought into arrest. Manoj Bajpayee’s portrayal of a character in the 1998 crime film Satya served as the inspiration for the persona. His real name is Vinit Naik and he is claimed to be a BJP IT cell member known for spreading the party’s agenda on Twitter/X.
The arrest took place in Ponda. Bhiku Mhatre posted a screenshot of an email from X’s legal team a few hours prior to his detention, which revealed that the Bengaluru City Magistrate had issued a court order pertaining to X’s account. The individual asserted that he had “never” shared anything that would be considered provocative or group-oriented, charging the Congress party with trying to “intimidate” him for “speaking truth.”

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Congress administration came under fire from the BJP for the arrest, which it said was an abuse of authority. A number of BJP politicians expressed their support for Bhiku Mhatre and promised to provide him with legal assistance.
Amit Malviya who is BJP’s IT cell chief said “Karnataka Police has arrested @MumbaichaDon from Goa. We are in touch with his family and will ensure he gets all legal support.”
