A 26-year-old medical student who didn’t know how to swim was allegedly pushed into a lake by his friends and left to struggle in the water for nearly 20 minutes, according to his grieving family.

Disturbing video footage captures the moment Christopher Gilbert was shoved off a dock at Lake D’Arbonne in Farmerville, Louisiana, on April 14.

Immediately after pushing him, the group of friends was seen urinating in the lake while Gilbert battled for his life. Gilbert attempted to stay afloat for nearly twenty minutes as a woman tentatively entered the water, only to abandon her efforts to save him.

It took an additional ten minutes before a bystander at a nearby restaurant intervened, pulling Gilbert to safety.

What Did Gilbert’s Mother Reveal?

By the time he reached the hospital, Gilbert was brain dead, and his other organs were failing, his mother, Yolanda George, shared. He remained on a ventilator for 72 hours, which his mother described as “dialysis for the lungs.”

George recounted her shock and grief, “I was devastated. I felt like my life had ended. My son was on track to become a medical doctor. He earned his master’s degree in biological science last year and was preparing for medical school. This is unimaginable.”

She rushed to the hospital after receiving a call from one of his friends, informing her that Gilbert had been underwater for about 20 minutes.

The police stated that the group of friends initially dismissed the incident as “horse-play,” claiming that Gilbert “just kind of fell face-first into the water.” However, one of them later confessed to having pushed him off the dock.

What Did Attorney Say?

Family Attorney Claudia Payne countered the claim of horse-play, asserting that the act of pushing Gilbert into the lake was intentional and criminal. “In the legal field, we categorize events as we see fit,” she said. “The police might call it horse-play, but we see it as a criminal act.”

Gilbert is beginning to show signs of cognitive response but still cannot speak and remains on life support, with his lungs operating at just 20% capacity.

His family is demanding justice, with their lawyer arguing that the friends’ actions indicated clear criminal intent. George expressed her disbelief: “Why would you push my son into a lake knowing he couldn’t swim?”
