F1 Legend Nelson Piquet’s Racist Comments towards Lewis Hamilton resurfaced as Piquet faces backlash
Following Nelson Piquet’s use of a racially insensitive phrase to refer to Lewis Hamilton, Formula 1 fans criticized him. Piquet made the remarks when discussing Hamilton’s victory at the 2021 British Grand Prix during a podcast in Brazil. During the race, Max Verstappen and Hamilton got into a collision on the first lap, which resulted in the Dutchman losing control of his vehicle and losing control of the race.
When questioned about the incident in November, Piquet indicated that Verstappen was intentionally pushed off the track by Hamilton and twice used the phrase “neguinho” to describe the Mercedes driver as he ran the scenario through his head.
In an interview with the Brazilian journal Estadao, Piquet repeatedly used a racial term, which was Brazilian slang for the N-word to disparage Hamilton, who went on to win the race. Piquet said in a video that was made public on Monday that the opposing driver didn’t have time to swerve and that the n******* drove the car the wrong way. The car was turned around the wrong way on the corner by the n******* since he wasn’t aware of the curve.

F1 also recognized Hamilton’s relentless efforts to advance diversity and inclusion, which is an inspiration to many. On social media, Hamilton also responded to Piquet’s remarks, stating that these antiquated racial viewpoints must change and have no place in F1 sport.
