A few seconds later, Sainz leaped from the vehicle unharmed and cut a sad figure on the side of the track. On brand-new tyres, the Spaniard was pursuing Max Verstappen, and a finish in second place seemed assured. As his car gave way under him, the Ferrari driver screamed on the team radio in fury, “Engine, engine, no, no, no, no!”

The amount of the damage is expected to be determined by Ferrari when the car is brought back to the shop due to the nature of the engine failure, which appeared to have seriously damaged the entire power unit.

Carlos Sainz’s Latest Setback in 2022 F1 Title Race

The Monegasque Charles Leclerc was able to secure a much-needed race victory, but Sainz’s retirement, which came only one week after he won his first race of his career at the British Grand Prix, dealt a serious damage to his championship hopes. Sainz’s deficit over Leclerc in the standings, which was only 11 points when the Spielberg race began, will now be a whopping 36 points.

This season, Ferrari has been reluctant to utilize team instructions, but this may potentially change as gap between Sainz and Leclerc is now as large as gap between Leclerc and leader Verstappen. Leclerc was forced to withdraw from the Spanish and Azerbaijan Grands Prix because of mechanical problems, but the Prancing Horse has been beset with them this season. Sainz had to retire from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix early due to power unit problems, making this occurrence his second technical failure in a Ferrari.
