Virat Kohli, with his unparalleled ability to analyze asking rates and chase wizardry, has made a name for himself as one of the best performers in one-day cricket.ย

His success in run chases is remarkable, with an impressive record of 5691 runs at an astonishing average of 90.33, contributing to India winning 101 of the 162 matches he’s been involved in.ย

However, when India has batted first, Kohli’s numbers drop significantly, with 5643 runs at an average of 50.38 in 123 matches.

Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest chasers the sport has ever produced, Virat Kohli is undoubtedly the Chase Master in Cricket and has scored a stunning 43 hundreds – 27 in ODIs and 16 in Tests – while batting second in international cricket.

In contrast, Rohit Sharma, while not as emphatic as Kohli in chasing, still boasts a strong record with an average of 50.01 in 149 matches. Together, they have propelled India to a remarkable win percentage of 66.6 in ODIs when batting second since 2019. This statistic stands as a testament to their excellence in successful chases.

The challenge of batting first involves multiple aspects. For batsmen, it’s about assessing the par total on a specific pitch and pacing their innings accordingly. Kohli, in recent times, has faced difficulties in finding the right tempo when setting a target.ย

As Rohit Sharma points out, when batting first, setting a competitive target is vital, but it comes with the added responsibility of preserving your wicket.

Bowlers, on the other hand, need to adapt to the pressure of defending a total. In conditions where dew plays a significant role, Indian spinners must learn to cope with the challenges posed by a wet ball under lights. Kuldeep Yadav’s confidence in bowling under lights is admirable, but the conditions and the toss factor play an important role.

Speaking of the toss factor, it’s worth noting that India has won only twice out of five tosses in the tournament. They chose to chase and emerged victorious in both games. Still, it’s apparent that India has a preference for chasing, with a considerable number of instances where they opted to bat second in ODIs since 2019.

The recent loss of England to South Africa highlights the importance of the decision to bat first or second. England skipper Jos Buttler admitted that with hindsight, batting first might have been a better decision.ย
