About Crucible Contract

The Crucible has been the home of the snooker World Championship since 1977, accommodating only 980 spectators, but its contract is set to expire in 2027.

Some players, including Ronnie O’Sullivan and Hossein Vafaei from Iran, have expressed concerns about the venue’s size and have suggested relocating the event.
New Location for Relocation

As per reports, the potential new locations include China and Saudi Arabia. Speaking to the media, Hearn outlined the possible options for the championship’s future.

In his statement, Hearn said, “One option is to stay in Sheffield and accept the limitations. Option two is if Sheffield City Council builds a new 3,000-seat arena, which would allow us to extend our contract for a longer period.”

He further added, “Option three is to move the championship elsewhere for 10 years. Option four involves rotating the championship around the world, perhaps one year in Saudi Arabia, one year in China, and one year in Sheffield as it is.”

The Crucible’s Intimate and iconic setting has been a defining feature of the snooker championship, earning it a special place in the sport’s history. However, Hearn emphasized that if the event is to stay in Sheffield, improvements to the venue are essential.

Hearn further expressed his preference for keeping the championship in Sheffield but stressed the need for action. “I’m doing everything I can to stay in Sheffield, but it requires cooperation. I’ll stay here as long as we’re wanted.”
