The Indian men’s badminton team defeated Indonesia 3-0 to earn their first-ever Thomas Cup gold. Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and the doubles combo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made history. India continued their strong run in the competition and white-washed the tournament’s most successful team of all time Indonesia to win the Thomas Cup for the first time.
Lakshya Sen, who had lost in the quarterfinal and semifinal, started India’s reign with a come-from-behind victory over Anthony Ginting in the final. After losing the first game to Kevin Sukamuljo and Mohammad Ahsan, Chirag and Satwik found themselves in a similar situation. However, Satwik-Chirag rallied in the second game to force the contest into a decider, which the Indian shuttlers won. Satwik and Chirag won the game 18-21, 23-21, 21-19, while Lakshya won 8-21, 21-17, and 21-16.
All eyes were on Srikanth, as the World No. 11 went undefeated in the competition. Srikanth delivered a superb performance and won 21-15, 23-21 over No. 8-ranked Jonatan Christie to give India a piece of history. Neither HS Prannoy nor MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila, who had played vital roles in the previous two knockout matches, were needed today.

Thomas Cup 2022 Prize Money, Reward by Indian Government, and Reactions
The prize pool for Thomas Cup is expected to be over $1 million, with the champions India set to claim around $120,000. In addition, Anurag Thakur, India’s sports minister, offered a cash prize of Rs 1 crore for the Thomas Cup champions. He claimed that because of this historical feat, India is loosening its rules regarding cash rewards.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also gave the Indian badminton team his best wishes following historical Thomas Cup title.
