Prediction

Both Denis Shapovalov and Borna Coric began their quarterfinal matches in Tokyo this week with undefeated records. The Canadian, who reached the semifinals of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships last week in Seoul, continued his winning streak with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on Friday night.

Shapovalov defeated Coric in his third attempt by converting on three of his four break chances, giving him his maiden ATP Head2Head victory. The seventh seed failed to serve out the opening set at 5-4 after facing just one break point, but he recovered to win the set on the return. After breaking once again in the second set, he won in one hour and 17 minutes on the strength of his serving. In the second set, the 23-year-old had a run of 13 straight points won on service and only dropped three points on his own serve.

Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz went to the semifinals of the 2022 Japan Open after Nick Kyrgios granted Fritz a walkover in the quarterfinals. The American only needs one more victory to move into the top 10 of the ATP rankings following the Australian’s withdrawal from the tournament. This will be the American’s third semifinal of the year after Indian Wells and Eastbourne. He won both of his previous contests, and he intends to win again in Tokyo.

The main distinction between the two is that while Shapovalov has the potential to be a brilliant player, Fritz is a player of exceptional talent. He is also prone to making careless mistakes. His talent has both the appeal and the drawback of that. He has been the former during the past 10 or so days rather than the latter. And when he is at his best, he has a much more weapons than the American does to defeat Fritz. Therefore, it is likely that the head-to-head is set up as it is.
