Neil initiated his professional career with Airdrieonians in 2000, spending half a season in the Scottish Football League First Division before making a move to Barnsley.

During his four-year tenure at Barnsley, he participated in 142 matches across various competitions. Subsequently, Neil joined Mansfield Town on a free transfer after his time at Barnsley, completing a season with the club.

Neil, a 42-year-old Scot, spent 16 months with the club, joining them in August 2022 after leaving Sunderland. Last season, Stoke City finished 16th under his guidance, a decline from consecutive 14th place finishes in the previous seasons.
